The City of the Great King

The pleasures of that city beckon
But destruction lies at its gate
The crowds on the wide road enter
Oblivious to their fate

Responding to a supernatural calling
From Godís merciful sovereign grace
We seek a continuing city
And hasten to leave this place

The road is narrow and fraught with perils
And there are hardships it will bring
But we march relentlessly onward
Toward Zion and the Great King

The Spirit guides, the Shepherd leads
And we never walk alone
Till we cross the shining river
And bow before the throne

Forgetting those things which are behind
March on my soul in strength
And faint not in the road ahead
Despite it trials or its length

Some glorious morning the journey will end
And the golden river will be crossed
And the gates of that wondrous city
Will make us forget the painful cost

And when we see the object of our faith,
The righteous King of Glory
Weíll know his precious promises
Were much more than just a story

A touch from the Masterís nail scarred hands
Will wipe away the tears
And make us forget the suffering
Of all our earthly years

And like the prodigal son of long ago
A royal feast awaits us there
We would gladly be the Masterís slave
But He insists we be His heir

Then joining the chorus of the heavenly hosts
Praises and honor we will sing
To the King of kings and Lord of lords
In that blessed, Holy city, of the Great King

(Beautiful for situation, the joy of the whole earth, is mount Zion,
on the sides of the north, the city of the great King. Psalms 48:2)
